What's Happening?
The Arcadia Dunes: The C.S. Mott Nature Preserve is hosting its annual Dune Wildflower Hike at the Old Baldy Trailhead. This event, led by volunteer Paula Dreeszen, offers participants a chance to explore native dune plants while enjoying panoramic views
of Lake Michigan. The hike covers a 2.5-mile trail with a gradual elevation change, including a steep climb to Old Baldy, a popular perched dune. Participants can expect to see a variety of wildflowers such as Wood Lily, Pitcher’s Thistle, and Common Milkweed, which is crucial for monarch caterpillars. The event requires registration, and participants are advised to bring sturdy shoes, a camera, water, and snacks, and to dress appropriately for the weather.
Why It's Important?
This event highlights the importance of preserving natural habitats and educating the public about native plant species. By engaging the community in such activities, the Arcadia Dunes initiative fosters environmental awareness and appreciation for local biodiversity. The hike not only provides a recreational opportunity but also serves as a platform for conservation education, emphasizing the role of native plants in supporting ecosystems. Events like these can inspire participants to become more involved in conservation efforts and promote sustainable practices in their communities.
