What's Happening?
Deezer, a Paris-based streaming service, reported that over half of its new music uploads in June were AI-generated tracks, marking a significant increase from previous months. The platform received nearly 90,000 AI-generated tracks daily, surpassing
the 75,000 daily uploads reported in April. This surge has prompted Deezer to implement measures to combat fraudulent activities associated with AI music, such as inflating streams and diluting royalties owed to human artists. The company plans to remove AI tracks that have not been streamed for six months or are used to manipulate streams. Deezer's CEO, Alexis Lanternier, emphasized the need for industry-wide standards to ensure a sustainable music ecosystem.
Why It's Important?
The rise of AI-generated music on platforms like Deezer highlights a growing challenge in the music industry regarding the authenticity and monetization of content. This trend poses a threat to human artists, as AI tracks can dilute royalties and undermine the value of creative work. The situation calls for transparency and regulation, with organizations like the RIAA and IFPI advocating for clear labeling of AI-generated content. Deezer's proactive measures to address these issues set a precedent for other streaming services, emphasizing the need for technological solutions and industry collaboration to protect artists' rights and maintain the integrity of music distribution.
What's Next?
Deezer plans to continue refining its AI detection tools and collaborate with industry stakeholders to establish shared standards for AI-generated music. The company is also exploring changes to its supplier policy and considering the removal or demonetization of AI content. As the music industry adapts to these technological advancements, further discussions and regulations are expected to emerge, focusing on the ethical and economic implications of AI in music production. Streaming platforms will likely enhance their algorithms to better identify and manage AI content, ensuring fair compensation for human artists and maintaining consumer trust.
