What's Happening?
The European Union has introduced the Digital Product Passport (DPP) as part of its Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which became effective in July 2024. The DPP is a structured digital record linked to a physical product, accessible
via a QR code, providing comprehensive data on its identity, characteristics, sustainability, compliance, and lifecycle. This initiative aims to improve resource efficiency through better reprocessing, easier secondary use applications, and enhanced recycling. The DPP will progressively become mandatory for various product groups, with batteries being the first, requiring compliance by February 2027. Other priority product groups include textiles, electronics, steel, and construction products. The data contained within a DPP will cover aspects such as material composition, origin, environmental footprint, and options for repair or recycling. Access to this information is tiered, meaning some data will be publicly available to consumers, while more detailed technical data will be reserved for specific stakeholders like repairers, recyclers, second-life operators, and authorities.
