What's Happening?
Cummins has announced the integration of wedge capsule engine braking across its 2027 X15, X10, and B6.7 Octane HELM engines. This marks Cummins' first mechanical braking system, designed to significantly reduce brake response time by up to 60% compared
to conventional compression release designs. The X15 engine, for instance, will achieve response times under 100 milliseconds, a substantial improvement from the 300–350 milliseconds seen in slab brake designs. The new system features a two-step mechanism that limits load transfer to approximately 30% of full actuation force during partial engagement, mitigating a common failure mode in single-actuation pin lock systems. It also eliminates hydraulic compliance, simplifying OEM integration by removing the need for crank angle-based control.
