What's Happening?
Sam Evenson, the creator behind the popular YouTube channel Grimoire Horror, is set to make his feature directorial debut with an adaptation of his viral horror short, 'Ignore It.' He has partnered with 'Smile' producers Temple Hill Entertainment and
Anton for the project. Evenson will also write the screenplay for the film, which centers on a family's struggle to survive a terrifying entity known as 'The Woman,' who kills anyone who acknowledges her. Lily Collias, recently seen in 'Roofman' and 'Good One,' will lead the cast. The original 'Ignore It' was a 7-minute short released on YouTube in 2021, based on Jeff Speziale's viral r/NoSleep Reddit story, 'You’re Going to Notice a Woman in Your Home, You Must Ignore Her.' Speziale and Evenson are collaborating to expand the premise for the feature-length version. Anton is fully financing the film and handling worldwide sales, launching sales in Toronto.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a growing trend of digital content creators, particularly those with a strong following on platforms like YouTube, transitioning into mainstream film production. Sam Evenson's move from viral shorts to a feature film, following in the footsteps of other YouTube talents, highlights the platform's role as a significant incubator for new directorial voices and original horror concepts. The involvement of established producers like Temple Hill Entertainment ('Smile') and Anton lends credibility and resources to the project, indicating a recognition of Evenson's talent and the commercial potential of his work. For the horror genre, this trend brings fresh perspectives and stories that have already proven their appeal to a digital audience, potentially revitalizing cinematic horror with innovative narratives. It also demonstrates how online communities, such as Reddit's r/NoSleep, can serve as fertile ground for developing compelling intellectual property that can be adapted for broader audiences.
What's Next?
Anton is launching sales for 'Ignore It' in Toronto, indicating that the film is actively seeking distribution deals. With Lily Collias attached as the lead and Evenson set to write and direct, the project is moving towards production. While Evenson is also developing another viral short, 'Mora,' into a feature with Neon, 'Ignore It' is slated to go into production first. This suggests that audiences can anticipate more details about casting, filming schedules, and a potential release timeline in the coming months. The collaboration between Evenson and Speziale to expand the original story for a feature film will be crucial in maintaining the essence of the viral short while developing a compelling narrative for a longer format. The success of 'Ignore It' could further solidify Evenson's position as a significant new voice in horror and encourage more studios to look towards YouTube and other digital platforms for emerging talent and story ideas.
Beyond the Headlines
The transition of 'Ignore It' from a viral YouTube short and Reddit story to a feature film underscores the evolving landscape of content creation and consumption. It highlights how digital platforms are democratizing access to filmmaking and storytelling, allowing creators to build substantial audiences and prove concepts without traditional industry gatekeepers. This phenomenon challenges conventional pathways into Hollywood, demonstrating that a strong online presence and a compelling short-form narrative can be a direct route to feature film opportunities. Ethically, it raises questions about intellectual property rights and fair compensation for original online storytellers, as seen with Jeff Speziale's involvement. Culturally, it reflects a shift in audience engagement, where viewers actively participate in the discovery and popularization of content, influencing what gets greenlit for larger productions. This trend could lead to a more diverse range of voices and narratives reaching mainstream cinema, driven by grassroots popularity rather than solely by studio development pipelines.
