What's Happening?
Chris Jericho, known for his wrestling career and roles in horror films, has been cast as 'The Hunter,' a ruthless bounty hunter, in the upcoming creature-horror action film 'I Am the Teeth.' Epic Pictures Group is introducing the project to international
buyers at the American Film Market in Los Angeles. The film, directed by Scott B. Hansen from a script co-written with J.R. Curtis and Desiree Hansen, centers on five middle schoolers who discover a werewolf in the woods. After accidentally trapping the creature, they realize it is a young woman who vanished over a decade ago. Jericho's character then pursues this werewolf, putting him in conflict with the children who are trying to protect her. Hope Jordan and Thomas Parobek also star in the film. Epic Pictures is co-financing and producing the movie under its Dread Originals banner. Select scenes have already been filmed as a proof-of-concept for buyers, with full production slated for the first quarter of 2027.
Why It's Important?
This casting is significant for several reasons within the entertainment industry. For Chris Jericho, it further solidifies his presence in the horror genre, building on his previous roles in the 'Terrifier' franchise and 'Dark Match.' His involvement brings a recognizable name from professional wrestling, which can attract a broader audience to the film, including wrestling fans who might not typically seek out horror movies. For Epic Pictures Group, securing Jericho for a lead role can enhance the film's marketability, particularly as they present it to international buyers. The film's premise, combining childhood adventure with a darker creature story, aims to appeal to a wide demographic, potentially drawing in fans of classic adventure films like 'The Goonies' and 'The Monster Squad,' alongside horror enthusiasts. This project also highlights the continued trend of genre-blending in independent cinema, seeking to create unique cinematic experiences.
What's Next?
Following its introduction to international buyers at the American Film Market, 'I Am the Teeth' is scheduled to commence full production in the first quarter of 2027. This phase will involve principal photography for the remainder of the film, with the previously shot proof-of-concept footage likely being integrated or used for promotional purposes. After production, the film will move into post-production, including editing, visual effects, and sound design. A release date has not yet been announced, but it will likely follow the completion of post-production. The film's reception at the American Film Market will also be crucial, as positive buyer interest could lead to wider distribution deals. Further casting announcements or promotional materials, such as trailers and posters, are expected as the production progresses, building anticipation for its eventual release.
Beyond the Headlines
The casting of Chris Jericho in 'I Am the Teeth' reflects a broader trend of professional wrestlers transitioning into acting, particularly within genre films. This crossover appeal can be a strategic move for independent film productions, leveraging the wrestler's established fanbase to generate interest and box office revenue. Jericho's description of the film as a blend of 'The Goonies' and 'Silver Bullet' suggests an attempt to tap into nostalgic elements while delivering a modern horror narrative. This approach could resonate with audiences looking for films that offer both familiar comfort and fresh scares. Furthermore, the film's narrative, which involves children protecting a misunderstood monster from a human hunter, could explore themes of innocence, prejudice, and the nature of monstrosity, offering a deeper layer beyond typical creature features. This thematic depth, combined with genre appeal, could position 'I Am the Teeth' as more than just a horror film.
