What's Happening?
The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) wrestling team has been named the preseason favorite in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) for the 2026-27 season. The Cougars secured the top spot with 116 points in the coaches' preseason predictions,
narrowly edging out Lock Haven, which received 115 points. Edinboro followed with 101 points. While no SIUE wrestler is ranked first in their respective weight class, seven Cougars are listed within the top three. These include Drew Davis (3rd at 125 pounds), Marcel Lopez (2nd at 133 pounds), Ben Lunn (2nd at 141 pounds), Brock Woodcock (2nd at 165 pounds), Dominic Lopez (2nd at 174 pounds), Caleb Neal (3rd at 184 pounds), and Bryson Buhk (2nd at 285 pounds). SIUE and Edinboro are the only teams with wrestlers ranked in all ten weight categories. The team, under first-year Head Coach Daryl Thomas, is set to commence its season at the Cowboy Invite in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Why It's Important?
This preseason ranking signifies a strong start and high expectations for the SIUE wrestling program under new leadership. Being picked as the favorite in a competitive conference like the MAC can boost team morale, attract potential recruits, and increase visibility for the university's athletic department. For the athletes, this recognition validates their hard work and sets a high bar for their performance throughout the season. A successful season could lead to increased funding, better facilities, and a stronger reputation for SIUE wrestling, potentially impacting future athletic development and student-athlete recruitment. The close point spread with Lock Haven also suggests a highly competitive season ahead, which could lead to exciting matchups and increased fan engagement within the conference.
What's Next?
The SIUE wrestling team will begin its 2026-27 season by participating in the Cowboy Invite in Stillwater, Oklahoma, on Sunday. This initial competition will provide the first real test for the team and an opportunity for individual wrestlers to demonstrate their preseason form. Following this, the team will navigate its MAC conference schedule, aiming to live up to its preseason favorite status. The performance of the seven top-three ranked wrestlers will be closely watched, as their success will be crucial to the team's overall standing. The team's progress under first-year Head Coach Daryl Thomas will also be a key focus, as he aims to translate preseason expectations into on-mat victories and potentially a conference championship.
Beyond the Headlines
The preseason ranking reflects more than just current athletic prowess; it also indicates the effectiveness of the coaching staff and the overall program development at SIUE. For a first-year head coach like Daryl Thomas, leading a team picked as the preseason favorite immediately places him under significant scrutiny but also offers a prime opportunity to establish his coaching philosophy and build a winning culture. This early recognition can also influence the perception of SIUE's athletic programs more broadly, potentially enhancing the university's appeal to prospective students who value strong athletic traditions. The competitive nature of the MAC, as evidenced by the narrow margin between SIUE and Lock Haven, suggests that the season will be a true test of resilience and strategic planning, pushing the team to perform at its peak consistently.
