What's Happening?
Perigus Energy, formerly Ørsted Onshore Europe, has announced the appointment of Tom O’Brien as its new independent chairperson and non-executive director. O’Brien, a veteran in the renewables sector,
previously served as Managing Partner of Brookfield Asset Management, where he led the European renewable business as CEO until his retirement in March 2025. Since then, he has continued to provide strategic guidance and governance oversight as a senior adviser and consultant. In addition to O’Brien's appointment, Perigus Energy has promoted Eamonn Boland to the newly created role of Chief Commercial Officer and welcomed Declan McCarthy as Chief Financial Officer. Both Boland and McCarthy will be based at the company’s Cork headquarters. These appointments aim to strengthen the strategic management team as Perigus Energy progresses a multi-gigawatt portfolio of projects across Europe. The company, acquired by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners from Ørsted in May 2026, focuses on developing, building, and operating onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects in Ireland, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Its current portfolio delivers 668 MW of clean electricity, with three additional projects under construction.
Why It's Important?
The strategic leadership enhancements at Perigus Energy are significant for the European renewable energy landscape. Tom O’Brien’s extensive experience in the renewables sector, particularly his background as CEO of Brookfield Asset Management’s European renewable business, brings a wealth of knowledge and strategic insight to Perigus Energy. His appointment as independent chairperson is expected to provide robust governance and commercial focus, which is crucial for a company managing a multi-gigawatt portfolio of projects. The promotions of Eamonn Boland and Declan McCarthy further solidify the company's operational and financial leadership. This strengthened team is poised to accelerate the development and delivery of onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects across key European markets, including Ireland, Germany, the UK, and Spain. This move is vital for Europe's energy security and its transition to a cleaner energy system, as these projects contribute to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and meeting ambitious climate targets. The company's growth and successful project execution will directly impact the availability of clean, home-grown electricity, benefiting consumers and industries across the continent by providing stable and sustainable energy sources.
What's Next?
With the bolstered leadership team, Perigus Energy is expected to accelerate the development and construction of its ambitious portfolio of renewable energy projects across Europe. The company currently has three projects under construction in Ireland and Germany, and the new appointments are intended to enhance its capability to deliver these and future projects efficiently. Tom O’Brien's role as independent chairperson will likely involve providing strategic oversight and guidance to ensure the company's growth aligns with its objectives of contributing to Europe's energy security and clean energy transition. The focus will be on leveraging the combined expertise of the new management team to navigate regulatory landscapes, secure financing, and optimize project execution in the onshore wind, solar, and battery storage sectors. Stakeholders, including investors, governments, and local communities in Ireland, Germany, the UK, and Spain, will be closely watching the progress of these projects, as their successful implementation is critical for achieving regional and national renewable energy targets and fostering economic development in the green sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The appointment of a seasoned leader like Tom O’Brien to Perigus Energy's board underscores a broader trend in the renewable energy sector: the increasing demand for experienced leadership to navigate complex project development and market dynamics. As the industry matures and scales, the need for robust governance and strategic commercial acumen becomes paramount. O’Brien’s background with a major asset management firm like Brookfield highlights the growing intersection of traditional finance and renewable energy, indicating a shift towards more sophisticated investment and operational strategies in the green sector. This move also reflects the competitive nature of the European renewable energy market, where companies are vying to secure talent and expertise to gain a competitive edge. The emphasis on 'home-grown' electricity generation through onshore wind, solar, and battery storage projects also points to a strategic imperative for energy independence and resilience within Europe, reducing reliance on external energy sources and mitigating geopolitical risks. The ethical dimension of these appointments lies in ensuring that the accelerated development of renewable projects is conducted sustainably, with due consideration for environmental impact and community engagement, balancing rapid expansion with responsible growth.
