Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a smart ring capable of continuously monitoring multiple chemical biomarkers in sweat. This innovative device can track glucose, ketones, vitamin C, uric acid, lactate, and alcohol levels
without requiring physical exertion. The ring uses an osmotic hydrogel to draw sweat passively from the skin, which is then analyzed by an electrochemical sensor array. The data is wirelessly transmitted to a smartphone app, providing real-time health insights. The ring's glucose and ketone readings have shown accuracy comparable to commercial devices in trials with healthy individuals and those with type 1 diabetes. The project, led by Professor Joseph Wang, aims to offer a more comprehensive health monitoring tool than existing commercial rings, which typically only provide biophysical data.
