What's Happening?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19, will be streamed live in the United States on Peacock, but only in Spanish. This decision is due to the broadcasting rights held by NBC/Universal, which owns Telemundo, the network with
Spanish-language rights. Consequently, all 104 games will be available on Peacock en Español. The games will also be broadcast on Telemundo and Universo, with Telemundo airing 92 games and Universo 12. The tournament will be held across 16 stadiums in Canada, Mexico, and the USA.
Why It's Important?
The decision to stream the World Cup in Spanish on Peacock highlights the competitive nature of broadcasting rights in the U.S. media landscape. With Fox holding the English-language rights, NBC/Universal's strategy to leverage its Spanish-language rights through Telemundo and Peacock could attract a significant Spanish-speaking audience. This move underscores the growing importance of the Hispanic market in the U.S., which is a key demographic for advertisers and broadcasters. It also reflects the broader trend of streaming services becoming primary platforms for major sporting events.
What's Next?
As the World Cup approaches, viewers in the U.S. will need to decide how they will access the games, especially those who prefer English commentary. Fox will provide English broadcasts on its network and FS1, potentially leading to a split audience. The competition between streaming services and traditional broadcasters is likely to intensify, with each vying for viewership and advertising revenue. Additionally, the success of Peacock's Spanish broadcasts could influence future decisions regarding sports broadcasting rights and language offerings.
