What's Happening?
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has released a new assessment indicating that the Buda Limestone along the Texas Gulf Coast contains limited remaining undiscovered oil and gas resources. The report estimates 184 billion cubic feet of technically recoverable
natural gas and 12 million barrels of oil. Historically, the Buda Limestone has produced approximately 204 million barrels of oil and 287 billion cubic feet of natural gas since production began in 1930. The USGS highlights that the overlying Eagle Ford Group is the primary source of hydrocarbons in the Buda Limestone.
Why It's Important?
This assessment underscores the diminishing returns from mature oil and gas formations like the Buda Limestone, signaling a potential need for the energy industry to explore new resources. The findings could influence exploration planning, land management, and energy policy decisions. As the U.S. economy heavily relies on energy resources, understanding the availability of these resources is crucial for future energy security and economic stability. The report may prompt stakeholders to invest in alternative energy sources or new exploration technologies.
