What's Happening?
A new feature series by the South Bend Tribune is set to chronicle the history and legacy of Black high school athletes in South Bend, Indiana. The series, which has been in development for nearly seven months, aims to highlight the contributions and achievements
of Black athletes from the 1950s to the present. The project includes interviews with 19 prominent Black athletes and aims to address the sentiment within the community that their contributions have been underrepresented. The series will be released in four parts, each focusing on different generations of athletes, starting on July 20.

This series is significant as it seeks to preserve and honor the contributions of Black athletes in South Bend, a community where they have played a crucial role in shaping the local sports landscape. By documenting these stories, the series aims to provide recognition and visibility to athletes who have historically been overlooked. The series will be published in the South Bend Tribune, with each part focusing on a different era of athletes. The first installment will cover pre-1970s athletes, followed by features on athletes from 1970-1999, 2000-2026, and a spotlight on standout athletes from the 2025-2026 school year. The series is expected to spark discussions within the community about representation and the importance of acknowledging diverse contributions to local history.
