What's Happening?
Erwin Hines, a creative director, transformed a simple T-shirt design into a community space called Future Is Color in Barrio Logan. Initially, Hines created the T-shirt in response to the murder of George Floyd and the subsequent protests in 2020. The
T-shirt, which carried messages about respecting Black people and culture, unexpectedly sold 5,000 units. Hines used the proceeds to support organizations working towards community transformation. The success of the T-shirt led to the establishment of Future Is Color, a space for music, conversation, and cultural exchange. The venue hosts events like Studio Sessions, jazz nights, and community discussions, fostering a sense of connection and collective liberation.
Why It's Important?
Future Is Color represents a grassroots effort to address systemic racism and promote cultural understanding through creative expression. By providing a space for dialogue and artistic engagement, Hines' initiative encourages community members to explore issues of identity, race, and social justice. The project highlights the power of art and design in driving social change and building empathy. It also underscores the importance of community spaces in fostering dialogue and understanding, particularly in times of social unrest.
What's Next?
Future Is Color is expected to continue expanding its programming, offering more opportunities for community engagement and cultural exchange. As the space gains recognition, it may inspire similar initiatives in other communities, promoting dialogue and understanding across diverse groups. Hines' work could also influence other creative professionals to use their skills for social impact, further integrating art and activism.
