What's Happening?
IKEA U.S. has announced plans to close its Bolingbrook store and relocate to a smaller format store in Naperville by late 2027. The current Bolingbrook store, located at 750 E. Boughton Road, which spans 313,000 square feet and opened in September 2005,
will remain operational until the new Naperville store opens. The new location will be situated in the Block 59 shopping center at the intersection of Route 59 and Aurora Avenue in Naperville and will be significantly smaller, approximately 66,000 square feet. This strategic move aims to position IKEA closer to growing population centers and a popular shopping district, while still maintaining accessibility for existing Bolingbrook customers. The new Naperville store is designed to offer a streamlined shopping experience and will include a Swedish Food Market and a Swedish Deli.
Why It's Important?
This relocation signifies IKEA's adaptation to evolving consumer shopping habits and demographic shifts within the Chicago metropolitan area. By moving to a smaller format store in Naperville, IKEA is targeting a more concentrated and growing customer base, potentially increasing foot traffic and sales efficiency. The move also reflects a broader retail trend towards smaller, more localized stores that offer curated selections and enhanced convenience, rather than vast warehouse-style outlets. For Bolingbrook, the closure of the large IKEA store presents a significant redevelopment opportunity for the 27-acre property, which is prominently located along the I-355 and Boughton Road corridor. The Bolingbrook mayor has expressed interest in engaging with IKEA regarding future plans for the site, highlighting its potential for new economic development.
What's Next?
The Bolingbrook IKEA store will continue to operate until late 2027, at which point it will close as the new Naperville location opens. Over the next few years, IKEA will be developing and preparing the new 66,000-square-foot store in Naperville's Block 59 shopping center. Concurrently, the Village of Bolingbrook is expected to initiate discussions with IKEA regarding the future of the 27-acre site that the current store occupies. This dialogue will likely explore various redevelopment options to attract new businesses and investments to the area. Customers in the region will see a shift in their IKEA shopping experience, with the Naperville store offering a more compact and focused retail environment.
Beyond the Headlines
IKEA's decision to downsize and relocate reflects a strategic pivot in the retail industry, where large-format stores are being re-evaluated in favor of more agile and community-integrated models. This trend is driven by factors such as the rise of e-commerce, changing consumer preferences for convenience, and the desire for more curated shopping experiences. The move could also signal a broader shift in how major retailers approach market penetration, opting for multiple smaller outlets in densely populated areas rather than single, large regional hubs. This strategy allows for greater flexibility in inventory management, reduced operational costs for physical spaces, and a more personalized customer interaction, potentially setting a precedent for other big-box retailers facing similar market dynamics.
