What's Happening?
Position Music, an independent publisher and record label based in Los Angeles, has announced the appointment of Pete Robinson as its General Manager, Creative Nashville. Robinson will report directly to Position Music Founder and CEO Tyler Bacon and President
Mark Chipello. In his new role, Robinson will be responsible for working with the company's existing Nashville-based songwriters and artists, as well as building out a creative team in the city. Position Music aims to significantly expand its footprint in the country music sector, leveraging Nashville's deep pool of songwriting and creative talent. Robinson brings over 30 years of experience in the music business, including nearly two decades as a music publisher in Nashville. He was a founding partner of Big Deal Music, which was acquired by Merck Mercuriadis’ Hipgnosis Songs Fund in September 2020. Robinson remained with the company through its transition to Hipgnosis until 2022, after which he established Pete Robinson Consulting. His previous roles also include Senior Vice President of A&R at RCA and Epic, where he signed artists such as Dave Matthews Band.
Why It's Important?
This strategic hire signifies Position Music's focused effort to strengthen its presence in the Nashville music scene, particularly within the country music genre. Nashville is a pivotal hub for country music, and by appointing a seasoned executive like Pete Robinson, Position Music aims to tap into this lucrative market and foster new talent. Robinson's extensive network and proven track record, including his success at Big Deal Music where he contributed to 17 No. 1 country singles, are expected to be instrumental in achieving these goals. This move could lead to increased competition among music publishers and labels for Nashville-based artists and songwriters, potentially creating more opportunities for creators in the region. For Position Music, it represents a significant investment in a key music market, aiming to diversify its roster and revenue streams by focusing on a genre with a dedicated and expansive audience.
What's Next?
Pete Robinson will immediately begin working with Position Music's current Nashville roster, which includes artists and songwriters like Dave Cohen, Matt Geroux, and Zach Skelton. A key next step will be the recruitment and development of a new creative team in Nashville, which will be crucial for identifying and nurturing new talent. The company anticipates building strong relationships across Nashville’s music community, leveraging Robinson's existing connections. Position Music's expansion into country music could lead to new signings and collaborations within the genre, potentially resulting in new chart-topping hits. The success of this initiative will likely be measured by the growth of Position Music's Nashville roster and its impact on country music charts and industry recognition. This move also positions Position Music to potentially acquire more catalogs or enter into joint ventures with other Nashville-based entities.
Beyond the Headlines
Position Music's expansion into Nashville under Pete Robinson's leadership reflects a broader trend in the music industry where independent labels and publishers are increasingly investing in genre-specific hubs to gain a competitive edge. This strategy allows companies to specialize and build deeper relationships within particular music communities, fostering a more authentic connection with artists and their audiences. The move also highlights the enduring importance of Nashville as a creative and commercial center for music, extending beyond country to other genres. Furthermore, Robinson's transition from a major acquisition (Big Deal Music by Hipgnosis) to leading an independent company's expansion underscores the dynamic nature of executive talent in the music industry, where experience gained in large corporate structures is often leveraged to build and grow independent ventures. This could also signal a shift in how talent is scouted and developed, with a greater emphasis on localized, community-driven approaches.
