What's Happening?
Young Storytellers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting writing development programs in Los Angeles public schools, has launched the Jamie Tarses Fund. This fund is established in tribute to the late Jamie Tarses, an influential television
executive, and aims to support the ongoing work of the organization. Jamie Tarses, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 56, was a pioneering figure in television, becoming the first woman to head entertainment at a Big Three network (ABC) after rising through the ranks at NBC. She was an early supporter of Young Storytellers, joining its board in 2003. The nonprofit recruits volunteers from the entertainment industry and other fields with writing experience to mentor students in elementary, middle, and high schools. In 2025, Young Storytellers engaged 786 volunteers who mentored over 440 students weekly across 39 public schools and after-school sites in Los Angeles. The Jamie Tarses Fund will be formally unveiled at the organization's annual fundraiser, 'The Biggest Show,' held at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre.
Why It's Important?
The establishment of the Jamie Tarses Fund is significant as it honors a trailblazing figure in the entertainment industry while simultaneously bolstering a vital educational program. Jamie Tarses's legacy as the first woman to lead entertainment at a major network makes her an inspirational figure, and associating her name with a fund that nurtures young writers underscores her commitment to storytelling and mentorship. For Young Storytellers, this fund provides a dedicated source of support, enabling them to continue and potentially expand their programs that empower students through writing. In an era where arts education often faces funding challenges, initiatives like this are crucial for fostering creativity, literacy, and self-expression among young people, particularly in public school settings. The involvement of entertainment industry professionals as mentors also provides invaluable real-world connections and inspiration for aspiring storytellers.
What's Next?
The Jamie Tarses Fund is expected to become a cornerstone of Young Storytellers' fundraising efforts, providing sustained financial support for its programs. The formal unveiling at 'The Biggest Show' will likely raise awareness and encourage contributions from individuals and organizations within the entertainment industry and beyond. The fund's existence will help Young Storytellers continue its mission of pairing mentors with students to develop short stories, culminating in performances by actors. This ongoing support will ensure that more students in Los Angeles public schools have access to creative writing opportunities and mentorship. The organization recently appointed Kevin Bolling as its new executive director, and the fund will be instrumental in supporting his leadership and strategic initiatives for growth and impact.
Beyond the Headlines
The Jamie Tarses Fund represents more than just financial support; it embodies a commitment to nurturing the next generation of storytellers and honoring the legacy of those who paved the way. In an industry often criticized for its lack of diversity and representation, programs like Young Storytellers, supported by this fund, can play a crucial role in democratizing access to creative arts and empowering diverse voices from an early age. The fund also highlights the enduring impact of mentorship and the importance of giving back to the community. By connecting students with experienced writers and industry professionals, Young Storytellers not only teaches writing skills but also instills confidence and a belief in the power of their own narratives, echoing Jamie Tarses's own dedication to helping writers tell their stories.
