What's Happening?
FutureSports, an independent index administrator, has partnered with the National Hockey League (NHL) to create the CME FutureSports Performance Indexes (FSPI). These indexes will use official NHL statistics to measure the performance of teams and players,
providing a new class of financial products. The indexes are designed to offer hedging vehicles and investment opportunities, with CME Group planning to list futures contracts based on these benchmarks for the 2026-2027 season. The partnership aims to maintain high standards of integrity and transparency, aligning with the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) Principles for Financial Benchmarks.
Why It's Important?
This development signifies a novel intersection between sports and financial markets, potentially transforming how sports data is utilized beyond traditional applications. By creating financial products based on sports performance, the partnership opens new avenues for risk management and investment, appealing to a wide range of stakeholders including asset managers, insurers, and individual investors. This could lead to increased market liquidity and offer a unique asset class for diversification.
What's Next?
The launch of these index-based futures contracts is pending regulatory review, with the first contracts expected to be available for the 2026-2027 NHL season. Stakeholders such as asset managers and trading firms are anticipated to participate, contributing to the liquidity of this new asset class. The success of this initiative could pave the way for similar financial products in other sports leagues.
