A new public art initiative has launched in Downtown Des Moines (DSM), featuring mini art vending machines placed in five different locations. This project, a collaboration between Operation Downtown, the Greater Des Moines Partnership, and Mainframe
Studios, aims to support local artists and encourage residents, employees, and visitors to explore the downtown area. The machines offer surprise artworks from 18 local artists, with each piece costing four quarters. The initiative is designed to make art affordable and accessible while providing direct support to the creators. Angie Pfannkuch, 2026 Board Chair of Operation Downtown, highlighted that these machines add an element of surprise and creativity to everyday places, offering a new reason to discover downtown and its unique artists. Tad Guy, Special Projects Coordinator at The Partnership, emphasized the role of public art in creating memorable experiences and enhancing the vibrancy of Downtown DSM. Julia Franklin, Executive Director of Mainframe Studios, noted that the vending machines offer artists a meaningful, approachable, and fun way to connect with new audiences.
