What's Happening?
Infinitopes, a clinical-stage biotechnology company, has dosed the first patient with its investigational therapeutic cancer vaccine, ITOP1, as part of the VISTA Phase 1/2a clinical trial. This trial, conducted in partnership with the University of Oxford,
aims to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and immune response of ITOP1 in patients with newly diagnosed, surgically resectable oesophageal and gastro-oesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. The VISTA study is unique in its approach, administering the vaccine while the primary tumor remains in situ, potentially enhancing anti-tumor immune responses. Infinitopes' Precision Immunomics platform, which combines large-scale immunopeptidomic antigen discovery with engineered viral vector technologies, is central to this trial. The platform identifies naturally presented tumor antigens to stimulate durable T-cell immunity against solid tumors.
Why It's Important?
The initiation of the VISTA trial marks a significant milestone in cancer treatment, particularly for oesophageal cancer, which has limited therapeutic options. By exploring a neoadjuvant approach, the trial could redefine treatment protocols, potentially leading to earlier and more effective immune responses against tumors. What's Next?
The VISTA trial will continue with a Phase 1 safety lead-in, recruiting eight participants to assess safety and vaccine-induced immunity. Following this, the trial will progress to a randomized, placebo-controlled Phase 2a stage, enrolling an additional 52 participants. Initial safety and immunological data are expected by early 2027. The outcomes of this trial could influence future clinical practices and regulatory approvals for cancer vaccines. Infinitopes plans to expand its research to other solid tumors, potentially broadening the impact of its Precision Immunomics platform.
