What's Happening?
MPC Container Ships (MPCC) has announced the acquisition of four eco-conventional container vessels for a total of $340 million. These vessels, each with a capacity of 7,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), are expected to be delivered in late 2026.
The acquisition is part of MPCC's fleet modernization strategy and is backed by a three-year fixed-rate time charter with a top-five liner company, projected to generate $180 million in revenue and $140 million in EBITDA. The purchase will be financed through a combination of bank debt and existing cash resources. Additionally, MPCC has secured a $375 million senior secured term loan to finance ten of the 16 newbuildings ordered last year, with the financing arranged by Société Générale and supported by several major banks.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition and financing deal is significant for MPCC as it strengthens its position in the global container shipping market, which is experiencing a shift towards intra-regional trade. The addition of modern, fuel-efficient vessels positions MPCC to capitalize on the demand for mid-size container ships, which are increasingly favored over older, less efficient models. The secured financing and charter agreements provide financial stability and predictability, enhancing MPCC's ability to generate consistent revenue and EBITDA. This strategic move is expected to improve MPCC's contracted revenue backlog and increase its revenue and EBITDA guidance for 2026, reflecting the company's robust growth prospects.
What's Next?
MPCC plans to continue its fleet renewal strategy by selling two non-strategic vessels, AS Selina and AS Angelina, for a combined total of $41 million. The company aims to maintain a strong balance sheet and leverage its financial flexibility to seize further opportunities in the container shipping market. The successful execution of these transactions and the secured financing will enable MPCC to enhance its capital returns profile and position itself for sustained growth in the coming years.
