What's Happening?
The USDA office in The Hague forecasts a significant decline in European Union live cattle exports. Projections indicate a drop from 761,000 head in 2025 to 600,000 in 2026, with numbers remaining at that level through 2027. This anticipated decrease
is primarily attributed to stricter EU animal welfare requirements for transportation, which have led Turkey, a major destination for European cattle in 2023, to virtually cease purchases from the EU in 2025 and 2026. Additionally, changes in Turkey’s supply policy contribute to this shift. The spread of diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease, bluetongue, and lumpy skin disease has also restricted shipments from several EU member states. Currently, the main markets for European cattle include Israel, non-EU Balkan countries, and the United Kingdom. In 2025, the European Union exported 141,496 head of live cattle to Israel, valued at approximately US$259.4 million, representing about 19% of the bloc's total cattle exports for that year.
