What's Happening?
Fayetteville State University’s (FSU) Broadwell College of Business and Economics has been awarded more than $2.7 million from the U.S. Department of Commerce. This funding is designated to expand business education and development programs, specifically
targeting small business owners in Cumberland County and rural communities across Eastern North Carolina. The allocation includes two distinct awards from the Minority Business Development Agency. Nearly $2 million will fund the new Entrepreneur Launch & Accelerator Program, a two-year initiative designed to guide innovators from idea validation to venture launch and growth. This program will feature four 10-week cohorts, incorporating FSU’s Real Venture Studio, AI Entrepreneurship Academy, Venture Launch Portfolio, and Entrepreneur Success Network. Additionally, a separate $740,000 award will establish the FSU Entrepreneurship HUB MBDA Rural Business Center for Eastern North Carolina, expanding FSU’s business development services to 23 counties. This center will be the sole MBDA-designated resource for rural Eastern North Carolina, focusing on capital access, digital and e-commerce capabilities, government procurement, and advanced manufacturing.
Why It's Important?
This significant investment in Fayetteville State University's business programs is crucial for fostering economic development and entrepreneurship in Eastern North Carolina, particularly in underserved rural areas. By providing comprehensive training and resources, the university aims to strengthen business formation, commercialization readiness, and technology adoption among small business owners, student entrepreneurs, veterans, military spouses, and early-stage founders. The expansion of these programs is expected to create jobs, attract capital, and contribute to the overall economic strength of the region. The FSU Entrepreneurship HUB's track record, having supported the launch of 246 businesses, created 1,033 jobs, and facilitated approximately $150 million in contracts and $34 million in capital formation since 2022, underscores the potential impact of this new funding. This initiative addresses critical needs for business support in a region that may lack access to such specialized resources, thereby promoting sustainable growth and reducing economic disparities.
What's Next?
The Entrepreneur Launch & Accelerator Program is set to run for two years, with its award extending through August 31, 2028. The FSU Entrepreneurship HUB MBDA Rural Business Center will operate for three years, with its award concluding on August 31, 2029. During these periods, the programs will deliver intensive monthly programming to specific counties like Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Bladen, and Columbus, while serving the remaining 18 counties through virtual and hybrid formats. The university anticipates that participants will gain the knowledge and confidence needed to build sustainable and scalable businesses, improve their use of technology and AI, and enhance their ability to secure funding and reach new customers. The success of these initiatives will likely be measured by the number of new businesses launched, jobs created, and capital flowing into the rural communities of Eastern North Carolina.
Beyond the Headlines
The expansion of these business development programs at Fayetteville State University highlights a broader national trend of investing in regional economic resilience and addressing disparities in access to entrepreneurial resources. By focusing on rural communities and historically underutilized businesses, the U.S. Department of Commerce's funding aims to unlock untapped economic potential and foster inclusive growth. This initiative also underscores the evolving role of universities as key drivers of local and regional economic development, extending beyond traditional academic functions to directly support community prosperity. The emphasis on AI entrepreneurship and digital capabilities within the programs reflects the increasing importance of technological literacy and innovation for business success in the modern economy, preparing entrepreneurs for future challenges and opportunities.
