What's Happening?
Mike Lee, former Head of Gaming and Livestreaming at UTA Creators, and Darren Yan, former Chief Talent Officer at FaZe Clan, have co-founded ISO, a new talent management and representation firm. The firm, which has secured initial capital from Influence
Media Partners, aims to represent creators, livestreamers, gamers, and music artists. ISO has launched with a roster of over 90 clients, including prominent livestreamers, gamers, artists, VTubers, and lifestyle creators across various categories such as beauty and food. Notable clients include PlaqueBoyMax, Jasontheween, Ironmouse, and Kyedae. The firm also boasts brand clients like Electronic Arts, Discord, and Underdog. ISO's services encompass talent management and development, brand partnerships, music and licensing, performance marketing, and clipping. Lee serves as CEO, Yan as Head of Music, and Matt Alsberg, previously of PlayStation, Twitch, and UTA, is the Head of Talent. The firm operates with approximately 24 employees across Los Angeles, New York, and Atlanta.
Why It's Important?
The launch of ISO signifies a significant development in the creator economy, particularly within the gaming, livestreaming, and digital content sectors. The firm's focus on original intellectual property, product development, live events, and expansion into international markets like China and platforms such as TikTok Shop highlights a strategic approach to creator monetization and global reach. This move could intensify competition among talent management agencies, as ISO introduces a compensation model designed to foster internal collaboration and employee retention, aiming to counter the frequent departures seen in the industry. By investing in clients from their earliest stages across diverse media, ISO aims to cultivate long-term careers for digital talent, potentially reshaping how creators manage their brands and businesses in an increasingly algorithm-driven landscape. The backing from Influence Media Partners, a music and entertainment investment manager, also underscores the growing financial interest and investment in the creator economy.
What's Next?
ISO plans to focus on expanding its clients' reach through original IP, product launches, and live events. A key strategic direction for the firm is its emphasis on global development, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region and China. Through regional partnerships, ISO intends to support content distribution on local platforms, facilitate collaborations with local artists and creators, secure brand partnerships, and organize live experiences internationally. The firm is also working with international talent, such as Sơn Tùng M-TP from Vietnam and Xin Liu from China, to build their presence in the U.S. This global expansion strategy, especially into markets like TikTok Shop where many industry players are not yet established, suggests ISO aims to carve out a unique competitive advantage. The firm's innovative commission structure and focus on employee retention will be closely watched as it seeks to establish itself in a dynamic and competitive industry.
Beyond the Headlines
The emergence of ISO reflects a broader trend in the entertainment industry where digital creators are increasingly recognized as significant cultural and economic forces. The firm's emphasis on understanding algorithms for discovery and engagement points to a shift in talent management, where data-driven strategies are becoming as crucial as traditional networking. The 'radically transparent' approach to employee relations and the unique commission structure could set new industry standards, potentially influencing how other talent agencies manage their staff and foster internal collaboration. Furthermore, ISO's aggressive push into the Asia-Pacific market, particularly China, highlights the growing globalization of the creator economy and the strategic importance of cross-cultural content distribution and brand partnerships. This move could also signal a future where digital talent agencies play a more direct role in shaping international cultural exchange and market penetration for creators.
