What's Happening?
Zendaya recently paid tribute to the late fashion designer Willi Smith by wearing a custom LaQuan Smith dress inspired by Smith's original design for Mary Jane Watson's wedding dress in the Spider-Man comics. The dress was part of a series of sketches
commissioned by Marvel Comics in 1987 to celebrate Spider-Man's 25th anniversary. The original design featured a traditional lace-adorned white gown, a blue miniskirt set, and a black-and-white striped mermaid dress. Zendaya's version maintained the signature two-toned stripes and red mermaid skirt but updated the look with a plunging halter neckline and white Christian Louboutin pumps. Willi Smith, known for his efforts to democratize fashion, passed away in 1987, shortly before his design was showcased at a live reenactment of the Spider-Man wedding at Shea Stadium.
Why It's Important?
This homage highlights the enduring influence of Willi Smith in the fashion industry and his contributions to making fashion more accessible. By reviving Smith's design, Zendaya and LaQuan Smith bring attention to the late designer's legacy and his impact on both fashion and pop culture. The collaboration also underscores the ongoing relationship between fashion and entertainment, particularly in how iconic comic book moments can inspire contemporary fashion. This event not only celebrates Smith's work but also reinforces the importance of preserving and honoring the contributions of past designers in shaping modern fashion trends.
