What's Happening?
Southern Copper, a subsidiary of Grupo México, has obtained the necessary environmental permits for its El Pilar project in Sonora, Mexico. The company plans to begin preliminary site preparation work in September 2026, with construction scheduled to start
in the first quarter of 2027. The El Pilar project, with an investment capital of $551 million, is expected to generate 450 direct jobs during construction and 300 during the operational phase. The project holds an estimated 317 million tons of copper oxide reserves and aims to produce 36,000 tons of copper cathodes annually using solvent extraction and electrowinning technology.
