What's Happening?
Two U.S. biotech companies, Akston Biosciences and OKAVA Pharmaceuticals, are conducting clinical trials to test GLP-1 weight-loss treatments for overweight cats. This marks one of the first attempts to adapt the successful human GLP-1 drug class, known
for treating obesity and diabetes, to veterinary medicine. Akston is sponsoring a trial at Cornell University involving about 70 overweight cats, while OKAVA is testing a long-acting implant designed to release medication over six months. These trials aim to address the significant issue of pet obesity, which affects 61% of cats and 59% of dogs in the U.S., according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. The results of these trials are expected later this year.
