What's Happening?
Leanna Gheseawan, co-founder of Go West, embarked on a year-and-a-half sabbatical with her husband, Fabio Branca, to explore the world. During her travels, she discovered a profound connection with the Himalayas and developed a passion for motorcycle
riding in the region. This personal journey inspired a significant shift in her business, Go West, which previously focused on private yacht tours in the Caribbean. Gheseawan meticulously planned a 16-day Himalayan adventure, bringing together 13 participants, predominantly from Trinidad and Tobago, along with two from Canada. Riders navigated challenging terrains on Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 motorcycles, experiencing diverse weather conditions and high altitudes, including reaching Umling La, one of the world's highest motorable roads.
Why It's Important?
This story highlights the transformative potential of sabbaticals, not just for personal growth but also for entrepreneurial innovation. Gheseawan's experience demonstrates how extended breaks can lead to new business ventures and significant career pivots, impacting the adventure tourism industry. By leveraging her personal passion and insights gained during her sabbatical, she created a unique offering that caters to a niche market seeking challenging and immersive travel experiences. This shift also showcases the adaptability of businesses to evolve based on the founders' personal journeys and market demands, potentially inspiring other entrepreneurs to explore new directions after periods of reflection and exploration. The success of her venture also points to a growing demand for authentic, challenging, and culturally rich travel experiences.
What's Next?
Following the successful Ladakh expedition, Gheseawan plans to organize another journey to India next year, indicating a continued expansion of Go West's focus on Himalayan adventures. This suggests a long-term commitment to this new business direction, moving further away from its original yacht tour model. The company's evolution from sea-based to mountain-based adventures signifies a complete re-branding and re-positioning in the travel market. Future plans will likely involve refining the expedition offerings, potentially expanding to other challenging regions, and continuing to attract participants seeking unique and demanding travel experiences. The success of these ventures could establish Go West as a prominent player in the adventure tourism sector.
Beyond the Headlines
Gheseawan's journey transcends a simple business pivot; it embodies the profound impact of experiential learning and the courage to redefine one's professional path based on personal revelations. Her story underscores the idea that true innovation often stems from stepping outside conventional boundaries and embracing the unknown. The challenges faced during the Himalayan expedition, from extreme weather to high altitudes, became integral to the experience, fostering camaraderie and a deeper appreciation for the environment. This narrative suggests a growing societal value placed on experiences that push personal limits and offer genuine connection with nature and culture, rather than just luxury or relaxation. It also highlights the power of a single individual's passion to reshape an entire business model and inspire others to seek similar transformative experiences.
