Oracle representatives informed Doña Ana County commissioners that Project Jupiter, a massive data center campus, might resort to grid power if its air quality permit for an on-site power system is not secured. While the project remains committed to generating
its own power using Bloom Energy fuel cells, this alternative is being considered as a fallback. Commission Chair Manuel Sanchez noted that the project's industrial revenue bond agreements and community benefits agreement were structured around the data center generating power on-site to avoid drawing from the existing local grid. Any shift to grid power would necessitate discussions with the commission and potential amendments to these agreements. Oracle emphasized that if they were to use grid power, they would aim to lower rates for existing customers rather than increase them. Construction for Project Jupiter is approximately 26% complete, with 3,686 workers currently assigned, including 988 New Mexico residents and 466 from Doña Ana County. Oracle also announced a partnership with Arable to conserve water in agriculture, estimating a saving of 20 times the water needed for the data center's cooling and power systems.
