Berkay Dursun, an AI programmer at IO Interactive, has stated that Rockstar Games' crowd technology in the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) is "at least 10 years ahead of the industry." Dursun, who specializes in building crowd systems, explained
that most games, including titles like Hitman and Assassin's Creed, utilize 'canned animations' for crowds, meaning NPCs lack individual AI, schedules, or genuine reactions. In contrast, he asserts that Rockstar's approach involves individual AI for each NPC, allowing them to react to players and live their own simulated lives, a scale and complexity unmatched by other developers. Rockstar Games itself has corroborated the extensive detail, revealing that GTA VI will feature over 600,000 unique NPC animations, which is more than ten times the number in Grand Theft Auto V and double that of Red Dead Redemption 2.
