What's Happening?
Garden Studios, a virtual production facility in London, has significantly expanded its capabilities by investing in a new virtual production stage, deepening its partnership with Brompton Technology. The expansion includes the integration of Brompton's
flagship Tessera SX40 processors and Tessera XD 10G data distribution units. This new stage features a 24m x 5m curved LED wall from ROE and a 10m x 5m high-resolution LED ceiling from Absen, designed specifically for driving and simulated travel scenes. The LED ceiling, mounted on a custom rig, can move freely and switch configurations rapidly, allowing for precise in-camera reflections and eliminating the need to reposition vehicles. This investment builds on Garden Studios' existing use of Brompton Tessera S8 LED video processors for its original virtual production volume, which opened in 2021.
Why It's Important?
This expansion by Garden Studios, powered by Brompton Technology, signifies a major advancement in virtual production capabilities, particularly for film and television industries that frequently require realistic driving and travel scenes. The high-resolution LED ceiling and advanced processing units enable filmmakers to capture crisp, in-focus reflections directly in-camera, reducing post-production work and enhancing realism. This technology allows for greater creative flexibility and efficiency, as productions can achieve complex shots without the logistical challenges and costs associated with on-location shooting or traditional green screen methods. The ability to quickly reconfigure the stage and maintain color accuracy across different frame rates makes virtual production more accessible and appealing for a wider range of projects, from high-end television to smaller-scale dramas and commercials. This development could accelerate the adoption of virtual production techniques across the U.S. entertainment industry, offering significant cost and time savings.
What's Next?
Garden Studios is expected to continue attracting high-end television and film clients, with several projects already slated for release in 2026 and 2027. The enhanced virtual production stage will likely be utilized for a broader array of driving and simulated travel sequences, pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in-studio. Brompton Technology will continue to support Garden Studios, including providing software updates for older processors, ensuring longevity and continued functionality. The success of this expanded stage could encourage other virtual production facilities globally, including those in the U.S., to invest in similar advanced LED and processing technologies. This could lead to increased competition and innovation in virtual production services, further integrating these technologies into mainstream film and television production workflows.
Beyond the Headlines
The investment in advanced virtual production technology by Garden Studios highlights a broader industry shift towards sustainable and efficient filmmaking practices. By reducing the need for extensive location shoots and physical set constructions, virtual production significantly lowers the carbon footprint of film and television productions. This aligns with Garden Studios' B Corp ethos and commitment to environmental responsibility. The technology also offers ethical advantages by minimizing risks associated with dangerous stunts or adverse weather conditions during filming. Furthermore, the increasing sophistication of virtual production tools, such as Brompton's ShutterSync and Dark Magic features, blurs the lines between digital and physical realities, challenging traditional notions of filmmaking and visual effects. This evolution could lead to new artistic expressions and storytelling techniques, fundamentally altering how cinematic narratives are conceived and executed.
