What's Happening?
Defense Maritime Solutions, Inc. (DMS) announced a $30 million investment to expand its operations in Chesapeake, Virginia. The expansion will create 32 new jobs and enhance U.S. capabilities for manufacturing, assembly, and lifecycle support of Wärtsilä
medium-speed engines. This move aims to improve domestic maritime supply-chain resilience and support the U.S. Government fleet. DMS operates from its Chesapeake headquarters and other U.S. locations, providing lifecycle support to government vessels worldwide.
Why It's Important?
The investment by DMS highlights the strategic importance of strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities in the maritime sector. By expanding its operations, DMS aims to enhance supply-chain resilience and support the U.S. Government's maritime needs. This move aligns with national efforts to bolster domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. The expansion is expected to create jobs and contribute to the local economy, while also supporting the objectives of the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort, a trilateral agreement to strengthen shipbuilding capacity.
