What's Happening?
A consortium comprising major technology and telecommunications companies, including Microsoft, Lightstorm, Tata Communications, Singapore Telecommunications, ASEAN Cableship, and NEC Corporation, has announced plans to construct a new undersea cable
named I-2SEA. This cable will link India with Malaysia and Singapore, spanning 3,600 kilometers. The project aims to support artificial intelligence, cloud, and hyperscale workloads, with landing stations planned in Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. The cable is expected to become operational in the fourth quarter of 2029. This development is part of a broader trend of increasing cable connectivity in the region, with India currently hosting 17 active submarine cables.
