Mercedes has offered an explanation for why its customer team, McLaren, has not been able to fully exploit the 2026 Formula 1 power unit as effectively as the Mercedes works operation. According to Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord, the disparity
is not due to any deliberate strategy by Mercedes to favor its factory team, but rather stems from intellectual property logistics and the need for customer teams to invest their own resources. Lord stated that while Mercedes provides excellent support and products, there are complexities in unpicking elements before they can be provided to customer teams. Additionally, customer teams like McLaren need to develop their own tools and invest cost cap resources to maximize the power unit's potential. This situation is particularly understandable given the brand new and more complex ruleset for the current season. McLaren's team principal, Andrea Stella, had previously hinted at frustrations regarding the power unit's exploitation, especially concerning straight-line performance.
