What's Happening?
Netflix has renewed its popular series 'Untamed' for a second season, with production already completed in Hawaii. The show, which initially premiered as a limited series, garnered significant viewership in its first season, attracting 92.8 million views
in the latter half of 2025, making it Netflix’s third most-watched TV title during that period. The first season, starring Eric Bana as federal agent Kyle Turner, was set in Yosemite National Park. For the upcoming second season, the narrative will move to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, where Turner will investigate a new murder case. The new season will feature a largely new cast, with Eric Bana being the only confirmed returning member. Filming took place in Hawaii from February 17th to May 22nd, 2026, across Oʻahu and the island of Hawaii, utilizing locations such as Manoa Falls, Kona International Airport, and during the Merrie Monarch Parade in Hilo. The production was significant for the local Hawaiian film industry, being the first series to film there since 'Rescue: HI-Surf' was canceled.
Why It's Important?
The renewal of 'Untamed' for a second season underscores Netflix's strategy of extending successful limited series, especially those that achieve high viewership numbers. This decision reflects the platform's responsiveness to audience engagement and its willingness to invest further in content that resonates strongly with subscribers. The shift in setting to Hawaii for the second season is notable, as it allows the series to explore new cultural identities and pristine landscapes, potentially attracting a broader audience interested in diverse U.S. locales. For the Hawaiian film industry, this production provides a significant economic boost, creating jobs and showcasing the state's scenic beauty as a filming destination. The success of 'Untamed' also highlights the continued demand for crime dramas set against unique natural backdrops, influencing future content development within the streaming industry.
What's Next?
While Netflix has not yet announced an official release date for 'Untamed' season 2, it is anticipated to premiere in the first half of 2027, with mid-March 2027 being a strong possibility based on the production timeline. A summer 2027 release, aligning with the first season's July 2025 debut, is also being considered. Viewers can expect to see Eric Bana's character, Kyle Turner, navigate a new murder investigation amidst the complexities of local tensions and the unstable volcanic landscape of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The new season will introduce a fresh ensemble cast, including Shea Whigham, Moon Bloodgood, and Kekoa Kekumano, among others, who will play key roles in the unfolding mystery. Netflix is expected to release a first look at footage and a confirmed release date in the coming months, building anticipation for the series' return.
Beyond the Headlines
The decision to renew 'Untamed' and relocate its setting to Hawaii reflects a broader trend in television production to leverage diverse U.S. landscapes as integral elements of storytelling. This approach not only offers visual variety but also allows for deeper exploration of regional cultures and environmental themes. The series' focus on national parks, first Yosemite and now Hawaiʻi Volcanoes, subtly promotes these natural treasures, potentially increasing tourism and public awareness of conservation efforts. Furthermore, the show's significant viewership figures highlight the enduring appeal of the crime procedural genre when combined with compelling characters and unique settings. This success could encourage other streaming platforms to invest in similar high-production-value series that blend mystery with the exploration of distinct American locales, influencing future content strategies across the industry.
