What's Happening?
EltaMD has initiated a new campaign titled 'No Offseason for SPF' to address the significant drop in sunscreen usage during fall and winter months. Research conducted by EltaMD indicates that sunscreen application decreases by 43% from summer to fall,
with only 57% of survey participants reporting use in fall and 46% in winter, compared to 100% in summer. The campaign aims to reframe SPF as a year-round daily wellness habit, emphasizing its importance regardless of season, weather, or occasion. This initiative involves collaborations with dermatologists like Dr. Dustin Portela and Dr. Wallace Nozile, as well as influencers such as Kristin Juszczyk, Allison Khong, and Olivia Harlan Dekker, to create engaging and educational content. The campaign leverages the football season as a timely entry point to promote consistent sun protection.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is important for public health in the U.S. as it seeks to counteract a widespread behavior that can have long-term negative consequences for skin health. The seasonal decline in SPF use contributes to increased risk of sun damage, premature aging, and skin cancer, which remains a significant health concern. By promoting year-round sun protection, EltaMD's initiative could lead to improved skin health outcomes for consumers. The involvement of dermatologists lends credibility to the message, while collaborations with influencers and sports figures aim to broaden the campaign's reach and normalize daily SPF application. This shift in consumer behavior could also impact the skincare industry by creating a more consistent demand for SPF products throughout the year, moving away from a purely seasonal market.
What's Next?
EltaMD plans to continue its 'No Offseason for SPF' campaign through various channels, including strategic collaborations, in-person experiences, and social-first content. The campaign will feature a 'SPF Playbook' highlighting targeted formulas like the UV Clear SPF Collection, UV Skin Recovery SPF Collection, and UV Daily SPF Collection, designed to address specific skin concerns and fit diverse routines. Additionally, EltaMD is partnering with Glamsquad to offer a complimentary 'EltaMD Prep & Protect' add-on with makeup services, introducing SPF as an essential first step in makeup preparation. This partnership, available in select markets until October 24, aims to integrate SPF into daily beauty routines and will involve seeding products to professional makeup artists and promoting them across Glamsquad’s digital platforms.
Beyond the Headlines
The 'No Offseason for SPF' campaign touches upon deeper cultural perceptions of sun protection, often viewed as a summer-only necessity. By challenging this perception, EltaMD is attempting to instigate a broader cultural shift towards recognizing SPF as a fundamental component of daily wellness, akin to other year-round health practices. This initiative could also set a precedent for other beauty and wellness brands to adopt more comprehensive, year-round messaging for their products, potentially leading to a more informed consumer base regarding preventative health measures. The campaign's emphasis on dermatological expertise alongside influencer marketing highlights a growing trend in health communication, where scientific backing is combined with relatable, accessible content to drive behavioral change.
