What's Happening?
American Express has enhanced the benefits for its Platinum Card® holders, specifically regarding the quarterly dining credit. The card now offers a $100 quarterly credit for spending at restaurants that accept reservations on Resy. This credit can be utilized
for direct purchases at eligible restaurants or for buying gift cards, either in-store or online. Notably, the credit is not applicable to The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. A significant expansion of this benefit is underway, with Tock restaurants being merged into the Resy platform. Starting September 15, over 8,000 Tock restaurants will become eligible for the $100 quarterly Platinum Resy dining credit, increasing the total number of participating restaurants to over 25,000. Cardholders do not need a Resy account or to make a reservation through Resy to earn the credit; any spending at a Resy-listed restaurant or its website will trigger the credit, excluding third-party delivery services like DoorDash, Grubhub, or Uber. The quarterly periods for this credit run from January-March, April-June, July-September, and October-December, requiring a one-time enrollment.
Why It's Important?
This enhancement significantly increases the value proposition for American Express Platinum Card holders, particularly those who frequently dine out or purchase restaurant gift cards. The expansion to include Tock restaurants broadens the geographical reach and culinary diversity of establishments where the credit can be used, making it more accessible to a wider range of cardholders across the U.S. This move could influence consumer spending habits, encouraging Platinum Card holders to prioritize dining at Resy-affiliated restaurants. For the restaurant industry, particularly those integrated with Resy and soon Tock, this represents a potential increase in customer traffic and revenue from a high-spending demographic. It also highlights the growing trend of credit card companies leveraging partnerships with dining platforms to offer tangible benefits, thereby fostering loyalty among premium cardholders and driving business to partner establishments. The exclusion of business cards from this specific benefit also delineates a clear focus on consumer spending patterns.
What's Next?
As the integration of Tock restaurants into the Resy platform progresses, American Express Platinum Card holders can expect a substantially larger network of dining options where they can utilize their quarterly credit. This expansion, set to begin on September 15, will likely lead to increased engagement with the Resy platform and participating restaurants. Restaurants currently on Tock are encouraged to ensure their systems are ready to process transactions that will qualify for the Amex credit. Cardholders should continue to monitor their spending to ensure they maximize the quarterly credit, especially as the third quarter draws to a close. The success of this expanded program could also influence future benefit adjustments by American Express and potentially inspire similar initiatives from competing credit card issuers, further integrating financial services with lifestyle and dining experiences.
Beyond the Headlines
The strategic integration of Tock into Resy, driven by American Express's dining credit, reflects a broader trend in the financial and hospitality sectors: the convergence of payment systems with lifestyle platforms. This move not only enhances customer loyalty for American Express but also positions Resy as a dominant player in the online restaurant reservation and dining experience market. It underscores the power of premium credit cards to shape consumer behavior and influence business models within the service industry. Furthermore, the emphasis on direct restaurant spending, rather than through third-party delivery apps, could subtly encourage a return to in-person dining or direct engagement with restaurant websites, potentially benefiting restaurants by reducing commission fees associated with delivery platforms. This initiative also highlights the evolving nature of credit card rewards, moving beyond simple points accumulation to curated experiences and direct savings on lifestyle expenditures.
