What's Happening?
Garrett Motion Inc. has announced that its oil-free centrifugal compressor technology will be integrated into Multistack's next-generation data center cooling platforms in the Asia-Pacific region. This development marks Garrett's expansion into industrial
thermal management. The technology will be used in Multistack's CRAC-DX (direct expansion computer room air conditioning) systems, with production slated to begin in the second half of 2027. Olivier Rabiller, President and CEO of Garrett Motion, highlighted the increasing need for efficient and reliable cooling as AI and digital infrastructure continue to grow. Garrett's compressor technology is designed to enhance energy efficiency, reliability, and system performance in these critical applications. The technology operates at over 90,000 RPM, supports low-GWP refrigerants, and is significantly smaller and lighter than conventional solutions.
Why It's Important?
This collaboration is significant for the data center industry, which faces escalating cooling demands due to the rapid expansion of AI and digital infrastructure. Efficient cooling solutions are crucial for maintaining optimal performance and preventing overheating in data centers, which consume substantial amounts of energy. Garrett Motion's technology promises greater energy efficiency and reliability, which can lead to reduced operational costs and a smaller environmental footprint for data centers. The adoption of low-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants also aligns with global efforts to mitigate climate change, making this a step towards more sustainable data center operations. For Garrett Motion, this represents a strategic diversification beyond its traditional automotive sector into the growing industrial thermal management market, leveraging its expertise in high-speed compression and oil-free bearing technology.
What's Next?
Production of Multistack's data center cooling platforms incorporating Garrett's technology is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2027. This will lead to the deployment of these advanced cooling solutions in data centers across the Asia-Pacific region. The success of this integration could pave the way for broader adoption of Garrett's technology in other industrial thermal management applications globally. Further advancements in compressor technology are likely to focus on even greater energy efficiency, reduced maintenance, and compatibility with emerging environmental regulations regarding refrigerants. The partnership may also encourage other cooling solution providers to explore similar high-performance, sustainable technologies to meet the evolving demands of the digital infrastructure sector.
Beyond the Headlines
The increasing energy consumption of data centers, particularly with the rise of AI, presents a significant challenge for sustainability and infrastructure development. Innovations like Garrett Motion's oil-free centrifugal compressor technology are vital for addressing these challenges. Beyond the immediate benefits of efficiency and reliability, the shift towards smaller, lighter, and more environmentally friendly cooling systems reflects a broader trend in industrial design and engineering. This move not only impacts the operational economics of data centers but also contributes to the overall reduction of carbon emissions associated with digital infrastructure. The ethical implications of energy-intensive AI development necessitate such technological advancements to ensure that digital progress does not come at an unsustainable environmental cost.
