Hyundai Steel Co. has commenced construction on its first electric arc furnace-based integrated steel mill in North America, located in Ascension Parish, Louisiana. The $5.8 billion facility is projected to begin production in 2029. This new mill represents
Hyundai Motor Group’s steelmaking arm's inaugural North American production base and is part of the automaker’s $26 billion commitment to bolster the U.S. local supply chain and industrial resilience. The mill will have an annual capacity of 2.7 million metric tons of hot-rolled and cold-rolled steel sheets, primarily for automotive applications. It will supply high-quality, low-carbon-emissions steel to Hyundai Motor’s Alabama plant, Kia’s Georgia manufacturing facility, and Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA). The facility will integrate on-site Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production with Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) steelmaking and downstream production of high-quality automotive steel, utilizing advanced technology to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 70% compared to conventional blast furnace methods. HYUNDAI-POSCO Louisiana Steel LLC (HPLS), a joint venture, will operate the mill.
