What's Happening?
Viasat, a satellite communications company, and WiSig Networks, an Indian deep-tech firm, have initiated global testing of a new 5G satellite Internet of Things (IoT) chipset. This development was announced at the Bharat Innovates 2026 deep-tech showcase
in Nice, France. The chipset is undergoing advanced evaluation at Viasat's laboratories in the UK to validate its communication capabilities with Viasat's L-band geostationary satellite fleet. The collaboration aims to standardize the direct-to-device (D2D) ecosystem by introducing a device class built around 3GPP Release 17 standards, designed for narrowband-IoT non-terrestrial networks. WiSig developed the technology stack, including the baseband processor and radio-frequency system-on-chip, ensuring the chip supports both L-band and S-band satellite frequencies. This chipset is engineered for ultra-low power consumption, enhancing the life of connected devices.
