What's Happening?
Walmart has announced a new combined membership offering access to both Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus for an annual fee of $120. This new bundle is nearly $100 less than purchasing individual annual memberships for each retailer. While the combined membership is only
available as an annual payment option, both Walmart and Sam's Club will continue to offer their standalone memberships. The initiative aims to provide greater convenience and value to shoppers, particularly as consumers face economic pressures from high gas and food prices. Walmart CEO John Furner stated that the company is raising expectations for what a membership can deliver, focusing on saving customers money and time. The membership includes benefits such as free delivery from both chains, access to Sam's Club warehouses, gas savings, 2% Sam's Club cash on eligible purchases, and a subscription to either Peacock or Paramount+ streaming services. Existing customers with accounts at both stores can link them to receive the discount. Walmart also plans to extend these joint memberships as a benefit to employees at both stores.
Why It's Important?
This new joint membership from Walmart is a significant strategic move to enhance customer loyalty and market share in a competitive retail landscape. By bundling Walmart+ and Sam's Club Plus, Walmart directly challenges other major membership programs, notably Amazon Prime, which costs $139 annually. The offering targets cash-strapped consumers by providing substantial savings and added value through delivery services, gas discounts, and streaming options. This move could significantly impact consumer spending habits, encouraging more shoppers to consolidate their retail memberships with Walmart. For Walmart, the membership business is a key driver of higher profit margins, with the company reporting a 17% increase in global membership revenue in the fiscal second quarter. The combined offering leverages the complementary nature of Walmart's everyday essentials and Sam's Club's bulk purchasing options, potentially increasing cross-shopping between the two brands and boosting e-commerce sales, which saw a 26% increase for Sam's Club in the fiscal second quarter.
What's Next?
Walmart anticipates that the new joint membership will encourage existing Walmart+ members to explore Sam's Club and attract new customers who might currently hold memberships with competitors. The company aims to roll out this combined membership ahead of the holiday season, a period when many households actively seek ways to save money and time. While the company does not expect the costs associated with this new program to materially impact its fiscal third-quarter or full-year guidance, its success will likely be measured by increased membership sign-ups, enhanced customer retention, and growth in overall sales across both Walmart and Sam's Club. Competitors, particularly Amazon, will be closely monitoring the impact of this bundled offering on their own membership programs and market strategies. The initiative also highlights a broader trend in retail towards integrated service offerings to provide comprehensive value to consumers.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of Walmart's joint membership reflects a deeper strategic shift in the retail industry towards ecosystem-based loyalty programs. Beyond mere discounts, these memberships aim to embed retailers more deeply into consumers' daily lives by offering a suite of services, from groceries and bulk goods to entertainment and fuel savings. This approach not only locks in customer spending but also generates valuable data on consumer behavior across diverse categories, enabling more targeted marketing and personalized offers. The emphasis on convenience and value also underscores the ongoing economic pressures faced by many U.S. households, making such bundled offerings particularly appealing. This move could accelerate the consolidation of consumer spending within a few dominant retail ecosystems, potentially making it harder for smaller, independent retailers to compete. The inclusion of streaming services further blurs the lines between retail and entertainment, indicating a future where consumer loyalty is cultivated through a holistic lifestyle offering rather than just product availability or price.
