What's Happening?
Alpena High School juniors Alexander (Xander) Allen and Logan Szumila have qualified for the MHSAA Division 1 cross country state championships. Allen finished sixth with a time of 15 minutes, 34.86 seconds, while Szumila placed 11th at 15:41.86 at the regional
meet held at Delta College. These times rank Allen second all-time and Szumila third in Alpena High School history. The Wildcats team finished ninth, but both runners advanced individually under MHSAA rules. Allen, a returning state qualifier, expressed increased motivation to achieve a top 30 finish at the state meet this year, having focused on improving his finishing kick. Szumila's qualification follows a season where he recovered from an injury, regaining his form in recent weeks. The two athletes regularly push each other in practice, contributing to their individual successes. Assistant coach Tim Allen, Xander's father, who ran for Alpena in the 1990s and competed at the state meet, coaches his son and the team, maintaining a professional approach while being proud as a parent. Running is a family tradition for the Allens, with Xander's older brothers also having qualified for states and a younger sister setting a middle school record.
Why It's Important?
The qualification of Alexander Allen and Logan Szumila for the state cross country championships highlights the dedication and consistent training within the Alpena High School athletic program. Their success serves as an inspiration for younger athletes within the school, demonstrating that hard work and perseverance can lead to significant achievements. For a smaller Division 1 school like Alpena, competing and succeeding against programs with larger enrollments is particularly noteworthy, showcasing the quality of coaching and athlete development. This achievement not only brings recognition to the individual athletes but also elevates the profile of Alpena High School's cross country program, potentially encouraging more students to participate in sports. The family legacy of running within the Allen family further underscores the deep-rooted commitment to the sport in the community, fostering a culture of athletic excellence.
What's Next?
Alexander Allen and Logan Szumila will compete in the MHSAA Division 1 cross country state championships on Saturday at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn. Allen's specific goal is to finish in the top 30, a significant improvement from his 70th-place finish last year. The coaching staff, including Assistant Coach Tim Allen, is focused on ensuring the athletes are well-rested and prepared to perform their best, emphasizing that this is the final meet of the year. Their performance at the state championships will be a culmination of their season's efforts and will determine their final rankings among the state's top high school runners. The outcome will also contribute to their individual athletic records and potentially influence future collegiate opportunities.
Beyond the Headlines
The story of Allen and Szumila extends beyond individual athletic achievement, touching upon themes of mentorship, family legacy, and the impact of sports on community identity. Assistant Coach Tim Allen's dual role as a coach and father to Xander illustrates the complex dynamics of family involvement in competitive sports, where personal pride must be balanced with professional impartiality. The emphasis on consistent training over flashy techniques, as noted by Head Coach Joe Donajkowski, reflects a broader philosophy of athletic development that prioritizes sustained effort and discipline. This approach not only builds successful athletes but also instills valuable life lessons in perseverance and goal-setting. For Alpena, a smaller Division 1 school, the success of its athletes on a state level can foster a sense of collective pride and inspire broader community engagement in local sports programs.
