What's Happening?
Pemex, the Mexican state-owned petroleum company, has implemented a multiphase surface pump system in its 5P field in southeastern Mexico. This system, developed by SLB, allows for the transportation of multiphase fluids through pipelines, eliminating
the need for separators, storage tanks, and flaring. The new setup has enabled Pemex to monetize associated gas at the processing facility, increase oil production, and achieve energy independence by using gas-powered generators. The initiative has also resulted in significant cost savings by reducing the need for truck transportation.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for Pemex as it addresses both economic and environmental challenges. By eliminating gas flaring, Pemex reduces CO2 emissions and monetizes previously wasted resources, aligning with global sustainability goals. The reduction in transportation costs and increased operational efficiency enhance Pemex's profitability. This project sets a precedent for similar applications in the oil and gas industry, showcasing how innovative technology can solve complex operational challenges.
