Evan Budz, a 16-year-old innovator, has created an autonomous AI-powered robot turtle designed to detect microplastics in water. Inspired by the natural movement of turtles, Budz developed a robot equipped with a 3D holographic camera and AI models to identify
small plastic particles. His project, which took around 2,000 hours to complete, won a $50,000 scholarship at the 2026 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair. The robot's design allows it to swim autonomously and efficiently, making it suitable for long-range missions in various aquatic ecosystems. Budz's work aims to provide a faster and more accessible method for detecting microplastics, which are typically analyzed in laboratories.
