BMW is advancing its use of humanoid robots by deploying the Figure 03 robot, developed by California-based Figure AI, at its Spartanburg plant in the U.S. This marks the first global deployment of a humanoid robot in a logistics workflow for BMW. The
Figure 03 is tasked with complex parts-sequencing, picking unsorted components from large containers, and sorting them onto sequencing trolleys for just-in-sequence delivery to assembly lines. This initiative follows the successful pilot of the Figure 02 robot in the body shop, where it assisted in inserting sheet metal parts for over 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. The Figure 03 incorporates new features such as soft components for enhanced safety, wireless charging for higher availability, audio functions for speech-to-speech communication, and improved hands with tactile sensors and palm cameras for increased precision.
