York Theatre Royal, in collaboration with Octagon Theatre Bolton and Royal & Derngate Northampton, has announced a new actor-musician production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 'Sunset Boulevard' for 2027. This reimagined staging will feature a company of actor-musicians,
aiming to create a more intimate experience for the audience by bringing them closer to the music and storytelling. The production is directed by Lotte Wakeham, Artistic Director of Octagon Theatre Bolton. It is scheduled to open at Octagon Theatre Bolton in April 2027, move to Royal & Derngate Northampton from May 5 to May 22, 2027, and conclude its run at York Theatre Royal from June 9 to June 26, 2027. This marks the first new professional staging of 'Sunset Boulevard' to be created by a theater in the North of England. The musical, based on Billy Wilder’s celebrated Paramount Pictures film, tells the story of silent film star Norma Desmond and struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis.
