The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted a license to Reflect Orbital, a California-based startup, to launch and operate its first demonstration satellite. The satellite, named Eärendil-1, aims to provide 'sunlight on demand' by beaming
a five-kilometer-wide spot of sunlight down to Earth after dark. This experimental satellite will feature an 18-meter by 18-meter deployable mylar film reflector. Reflect Orbital plans to deploy a constellation of 50,000 or more mirror-craft by 2035.
