What's Happening?
Laurence Frenette, a former forward for the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team, has signed a contract with SDE Hockey in the Swedish Women's Hockey League (SDHL). Frenette, who hails from Boisbriand, Quebec, concluded her college career with the Bobcats
by achieving personal bests in assists and points, and was part of the team that won the ECAC Championship. Her final collegiate goal was scored during a 4-0 victory over Franklin Pierce in the NCAA Tournament's Regional Semifinal. Prior to her time at Quinnipiac, Frenette played three seasons with the Clarkson Golden Knights. She now joins an SDE Hockey team that ended the 2025-26 season with a record of 19-6-11, ultimately losing in the semifinals to Frolunda HC.
Why It's Important?
Frenette's move to the SDHL signifies a growing trend of North American athletes seeking opportunities in European leagues, which can offer different competitive experiences and exposure. This transition not only highlights the international appeal of women's hockey but also underscores the increasing mobility and career options available to female athletes. For SDE Hockey, acquiring a player of Frenette's caliber could enhance their competitive edge in the league. Additionally, Frenette's international experience may contribute to her personal development as a player, potentially influencing her future career prospects in professional hockey.
