What's Happening?
Telemundo has obtained exclusive Spanish-language television rights for all UEFA men's club competitions, including the UEFA Champions League, starting from the 2027-28 season. This three-year agreement also covers the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Conference
League, UEFA Super Cup, and UEFA Youth League. Matches will be broadcast across Telemundo, Universo, Peacock, and Telemundo’s sports-focused FAST channel. This move follows Telemundo's record-breaking viewership during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where it attracted its largest-ever Spanish-language audiences for several knockout matches. Telemundo chairman Luis Fernandez highlighted the Champions League as a natural progression following their successful World Cup coverage.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition significantly strengthens Telemundo's position in the U.S. football broadcasting market, expanding its already impressive portfolio that includes the Premier League, Liga MX, and the U.S. national teams. By securing the rights to UEFA's premier club competitions, Telemundo aims to become a leading destination for football fans in the U.S. The deal reflects the growing popularity of European football in the U.S., particularly among Spanish-speaking audiences. It also underscores the increasing value of authentic and passionate sports coverage, as demonstrated by the network's success during the World Cup.
What's Next?
Telemundo's acquisition of UEFA rights is set to begin in the 2027-28 season, providing Spanish-speaking audiences in the U.S. with comprehensive coverage of Europe's top club competitions. The network will likely focus on leveraging its existing platforms to maximize viewership and engagement. As the start date approaches, Telemundo may announce additional programming and promotional strategies to attract a broader audience. The deal could also prompt other broadcasters to reassess their strategies in the competitive sports broadcasting market.
