What's Happening?
BMW of North America has partnered with Clemson University's Department of Automotive Engineering to develop a solar-powered electric vehicle prototype named Luminetta. This project, known as Deep Orange 17, integrates 1,781 photovoltaic cells into the
vehicle's exterior, allowing it to generate more energy than it consumes during a typical 24-hour urban commuting cycle. The prototype, which weighs 550 kilograms, is designed to harness solar energy both while in motion and when parked, potentially providing an additional 31 miles of range. The project aims to explore the potential of parked cars as energy sources, with the vehicle remaining at Clemson's CU-ICAR campus for further research and a public appearance planned for CES 2027.
