What's Happening?
Old Westbury Gardens is offering a new guided tour titled 'Secrets of the Service Wing,' which provides visitors with an in-depth look into the intensive labor and behind-the-scenes operations that supported the lifestyle of the Phipps family and their
guests in the early 20th century. The 60-minute tour explores various service areas, including the butler’s pantry, silver cleaning room, kitchen, scullery, and wine storage rooms, which are located on the ground floor and basement. A key feature of the tour involves descending a narrow staircase of 17 steps. Additionally, the tour now allows visitors to walk through the stately Dining Room, offering a closer view of its art and historic furnishings, moving beyond the traditional rope and stanchion barriers. Tickets for this tour also include access to Westbury House and the gardens, and all ticket sales are non-refundable.
Why It's Important?
This new tour at Old Westbury Gardens is significant for its contribution to historical education and cultural tourism. By opening up previously restricted 'service wing' areas, the gardens offer a more complete and authentic understanding of early 20th-century aristocratic life, highlighting the often-overlooked labor and logistical complexities involved in maintaining such estates. This initiative enriches the visitor experience by providing a deeper narrative beyond the opulent public spaces, fostering a greater appreciation for the social and economic structures of the era. For history enthusiasts and the general public, it offers a unique educational opportunity to connect with the past in a tangible way, potentially drawing more visitors and supporting the preservation efforts of this historic landmark. The tour's physical demands also underscore the practical considerations for accessibility in historical venues.
What's Next?
The 'Secrets of the Service Wing' tour is currently available, with tickets including access to Westbury House and the gardens. Given the physical demands, including descending a 17-step narrow staircase, the tour is not recommended for individuals with limited mobility or children under 8 years of age. Old Westbury Gardens will likely continue to promote this unique offering to attract visitors interested in the social history and operational aspects of grand estates. Feedback from participants may influence future tour enhancements or the development of other specialized historical experiences. The success of this tour could also encourage other historical sites to explore similar 'behind-the-scenes' narratives to engage a broader audience.
Beyond the Headlines
The introduction of the 'Secrets of the Service Wing' tour reflects a growing trend in heritage tourism to offer more immersive and authentic experiences that delve beyond superficial grandeur. By focusing on the 'intensive labor' required to maintain the Phipps' lifestyle, the tour subtly addresses themes of social class, labor history, and the hidden economies of the past. This approach can spark deeper conversations about the lives of domestic staff, the evolution of household management, and the stark contrasts between the lives of the wealthy and those who served them. It also highlights the ethical considerations in presenting history, moving towards a more inclusive narrative that acknowledges all individuals who contributed to the functioning of such estates. This shift enriches the cultural landscape by providing a more nuanced understanding of historical periods.
